19 Jun 2013
A large factory fire in Thomastown has sent thick smoke over the northern suburbs this morning.

Crews attended the Dunstan Court incident just before 5am and the incident controller quickly escalated the call due to the severity of the blaze, which was threatening nearby factories.

In total 15 appliances with more than 50 firefighters responded.

Of initial concern to first attending crews was the close proximity of a power substation and an asbestos roof on one of the factories.

Power companies arrived and confirmed that the power was disconnected.

The fire was brought under control in 50 mins by the excellent work of all attending crews.

The factory is unoccupied.

Breathing apparatus was in use and crews are expected to be on scene for some time.

MFB issued a warning to the community that smoke could be seen in the area of Duncans Road, Keon Pde, Settlement Road and High Street Thomastown.

At this stage a cause is not known.
