An exploding laptop has sparked a fire which broke out in a Canterbury home last night.

Firefighters were called to the home on Prospect Hill Road just after midnight and arrived to the sound of a smoke alarm operating.

The explosion caused numerous spot fires in a bedroom but the occupants were able to put them out prior to the arrival of crews.

A woman in her 20s was injured in the incident but did not require hospitalisation.

It appears the laptop was left on continuous charge, causing it to overheat.

The owner had also purchased an after-market battery online.

Fire Investigators will revisit the scene this morning to continue their investigations.

MFB recommends community members only purchase genuine computer components and follow manufacturers’ instructions.
