MFB Firefighters were called to a fire at an iconic theatre in Carlton shortly after 5am this morning. It was the second major fire incident to occur within a matter of hours in the metropolitan district this morning.

Firefighters arrived at La Mama Theatre on Faraday Street in less than 6 minutes to find the two storey brick building fully ablaze.

Crews conducted an aggressive external attack on the 20m x 20m building using an aerial appliance. Their efforts ensured that neighbouring properties and businesses were protected from the intense fire.

The building has been substantially damage and the City of Melbourne Building Surveyor is currently on scene to evaluate the integrity of the building.

A community advice message has been issued due to smoke in the area, and members of the public are asked to avoid the area if possible.

Approximately 18 MFB appliances and 50 firefighters, as well as Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria personnel are on scene and fire duties are expected to continue throughout the day.

MFB’s specialist Fire Investigation teams have been deployed to analyse the cause of the blaze.
