Iconic St Kilda restaurant The Stokehouse was destroyed by fire overnight.

A staff member from the restaurant rang to report a fire in the kitchen just after 11pm.
They also advised there was an evacuation of over 200 persons. When first crews arrived the ground floor was heavily involved in fire and was spreading to the second floor.
Given the wooden materials and the open areas the fire gained intensity very quickly. The strong westerly onshore wind also hampered firefighting as did a lack of water via reticulated supply.
Due to the ferocity of the fire and threats of building collapse crews withdrew and conducted defensive attack. No cause has been determined at this early time and MFB Fire Investigators are on site.
It took three hours for the blaze to be deemed under control but is still burning strongly within. The Council has been requested to check the site as regards demolition of the remaining portion. Support has been provided by: AV, VicPol and Electric Supply Co.
Jacka Blvd is closed to traffic to permit firefighting operations as regards water supply.
