Hotel fire in South Melbourne

A mattress that caught fire forced the evacuation of a number of people at backpacker hotel this evening.

A number of Triple Zero (000) callers reported thick black smoke coming from the Cecil Street premises at 6:13pm.
Wearing breathing apparatus for protection from the smoke, crews entered the property and were able to quickly contain the fire to the area of origin.

A preliminary search found that all occupants had safely evacuated the building. 
The buildings sprinkler system supported firefighting efforts and the incident was deemed under control within 25 minutes of the first crews arriving.

Two levels of the building have been affected by smoke logging and water damage. Firefighters will remain at the scene until the area is deemed safe.

At the height of the blaze there were approximately 30 firefighters in attendance including the ladder platform and teleboom.
