A number of residents were evacuated in the early hours this morning after a fire broke out on a balcony in Southbank.

More than 30 firefighters were called to the high rise apartment complex on Whiteman street shortly after 12:30am after a Triple Zero (000) caller raised the alarm.

Crews in breathing apparatus quickly made their way upstairs to the 19th floor and were able to contain the fire to the balcony.

The fire was deemed under control in 33 minutes.

No one was injured in the incident.
