MFB firefighters were deployed following reports of a gas leak in Mentone this afternoon.

Crews arrived on scene at 12:43pm and found gas leaking from a high pressure gas main on Balcombe Road. A short time later a second leak was discovered on Swanston Street.

Crews are using hose lines to disperse the vapour cloud and working closely with the gas company to isolate the leak.

Emergency services have blocked traffic on Balcombe Rd. The community is urged to avoid the area until further notice.

This is a protracted incident and crews will remain on scene until the area is safe.

It is not known at this stage what caused the leak.

There are currently five MFB appliances on scene and approximately 15 firefighters have responded, in addition to a Commander unit.
