01 May 2019
MFB firefighters were deployed after a strong smell of gas was reported near the corner Lonsdale and Spencer Streets in the CBD.

A pedestrian made the call to Triple Zero (000) just after 8am and crews arrived on scene shortly after.

MFB’s specialist HAZMAT teams commenced a thorough investigation and have pinpointed the source of the gas leak to a storm water tunnel.

MFB is working closely with the gas company at the scene, and they are about to commence digging to locate and stop the leak.

Emergency services have closed the Lonsdale Street and Spencer Street intersection to all vehicle, tram and pedestrian traffic to ensure community safety.

It is expected that this intersection will remain closed for some time and the community is advised to avoid the area.

There are currently three MFB appliances on scene and approximately 10 firefighters have responded, in addition to a Commander unit.
