Crews were called to Montgomery and Alfred Streets in Heidelberg Heights at 12:23 this afternoon following a high pressure gas main rupture.

Approximately 30 people were evacuated from their homes, with an evacuator believed to have accidentally punctured the mains.

Firefighters used monitors to dissipate the gas, with HAZMAT specialist equipment used for atmospheric monitoring. MFB's Scientific Advisor also attended.

A safety exclusion zone of 500 metres was set up, with police assisting to check homes for occupants and manage traffic.

Ambulance Victoria also assisted by checking evacuees, with no injuries reported.

The gas company is on scene repairing the 63mm four way valve lines, with repairs expected to take a further hour.
