Three people have escaped a blaze which took hold of a garage attached to a two storey town house on Mayfield Street in Coburg early this morning.

The first crews of firefighters arrived on scene just after 4:30am, just six minutes after a call to Triple Zero (000) was made.

They called for additional resources after they arrived to find the garage was fully alight and threatening to spread to the town house.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus quickly set about extinguishing the fire and protecting the town house.

They got the fire under control within half an hour, and managed to contain the damage to the garage.

The Municipal Building Surveyor will attend the scene this morning to assess structural damage to the property.

There was a lot of smoke in the area and MFB has distributed a community advice message for local residents.

More than 25 firefighters and ten appliances were responded, including five pumper appliances, one rescue unit, an aerial unit and two other command units.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria assisted MFB at the incident.
