MFB firefighters were called to a shop fire on Highett Road, Highett just after 9:30am this morning following several calls reporting black smoke billowing from a shop located in the strip shopping centre.

Crews arrived to find a two storey shop fully involved in fire, with both the ground and upper level affected.

MFB Firefighters wearing Breathing Apparatus gained access to the building to attack the fire and search for any occupants. Aerial appliances were also used to attack the fire from above.

Neighbouring buildings were evacuated and searched tocheck if the fire had spread.

The volume of smoke coming from the blaze also disrupted traffic on surrounding roads.

The blaze was deemed Under Control after 35 minutes, with MFB firefighters containing the fire to the building of origin.

At this stage, the fire appears to have been caused by a fault in the shop's kitchen flue, however further investigation will take place once the blaze has been extinguished completely.

Victoria Police was on scene assisting with traffic control and Ambulance Victoria also attended to ensure the health and wellbeing of those at the incident.
