Firefighters were called to Essendon Airport just before 4am after a plane was reportedly experiencing difficulty.

A pilot was not able to confirm the landing gear of a twin engine was down, and commenced a holding pattern.

Emergency crews arrived on scene as a precaution, but thankfully the plane was able to land safely at around 4:10am.

The pilot was in good health, and the plane did not sustain any damage.

The incident was declared under control just before 4:30am.
