Firefighters on scene at East Melbourne

Firefighters are on scene at a fire on the fourth floor of a building on Nicholson Street in East Melbourne.

Inital crews were called at 7:11pm and arrived on scene in just three minutes after being alerted via an automatic alarm, and following Triple Zero calls citing smoke.

All occupants have safely evacuated the building  and there are no reports of injury.

On arrival crews were confronted with a slow burning fire that was produding a lot of smoke and hampering firefighting efforts.

More than 30 firefighters on scene conducted an internal attack of the blaze. Their efforts ensured the blaze was brought under control at 10:17pm.

At the peak of the blaze there were seven fire appliances including three aerial firefighting appliances attending.

There is no impact on State Control Centre Operations, and a redundancy site is currently in operation. 

Community members are asked to avoid the area if possible and ensure roads remain clear for emergency services.

At this stage the cause of the blaze has not been determined. MFB's specialist fire investigators will arrive on scene when it is safe to conduct further analysis. 

Ambulance Victoria paramedics and Victoria Police are supporting MFB at the scene.

MFB’s specialist fire investigation teams have determined that the blaze began in an electrical switchboard cupboard at the site. 

Smoke damage and water damage from the automatic sprinkler system and fire fighting efforts has occurred on the fourth floor, with additional water damage on lower floors. 

There is no impact on State Control Centre Operations, and a redundancy site is currently in operation.
