MFB firefighters were called to Altona Meadows just after 4:30pm, to assist a driver trapped inside a car.

The driver had attempted to travel through a railway underpass on Merton Street, despite significant flooding due to recent rainfall.

When MFB crews arrived on scene the water was approximately 700mm deep, which prevented the driver from opening the car door and evacuating the vehicle.

With no time to spare, firefighters wearing personal flotation devices were able to remove the driver from the vehicle via the car window.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Firefighters are urging the community to avoid entering floodwaters and putting their lives at risk.

If it’s flooded, forget it.
