21 May 2019
More than 20 MFB firefighters and specialist HAZMAT technicians were called to Park Street in Fitzroy North where a gas main was pierced shortly after 10am.

Firefighters used hoses to break up the gas cloud, while the utilities company worked to switch the gas off at the mains to stop it leaking. The gas was stopped just before 1pm.

MFB’s specialist HAZMAT technicians set out six detectors to monitor the air quality in the area, and had additional firefighting crews on standby to ensure there were no issues.

Firefighters worked with Victoria Police to evacuate occupants of neighbouring shops and turn off all ignition sources at each property as a precaution.

An exclusion zone has been set up between Park and Pigdon Streets, and Nicholson Street trams are currently stopped in both directions.

This is a protracted incident and emergency services are expected to remain on scene for some time. MFB has requested that the public avoid the area.
