Firefighters have spent the afternoon battling two suspicious grass fires across Melbourne.

At about 1.30pm crews were called to the Morack Golf Course, in Vermont South, where a fast-moving grass fire was threatening nearby homes.

On the other side of town at Mill Park, firefighters rushed to the scene of another quickly moving grass fire which broke out behind the Plenty Valley Shopping Centre at about 2.30pm.

Firefighters worked quickly to knock down the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjoining homes.

Both fires are now under control and have been deemed suspicious.

Victoria Police is investigating.
