Firefighters have extinguished a fire that engulfed an abandoned house in Mentone on Thursday evening.

Crews were called to the property on Brindisi Street at 7:47pm after a Triple Zero (000) caller sighted black smoke and flames issuing from the property.

The first crew arrived on scene in four minutes and was met with half the house fully alight.

Donned in breathing apparatus firefighters made quick work and prevented the blaze from spreading to neighbouring homes. The fire was declared under control in less than 30 minutes.

At the height of the fire there were 11 MFB and CFA appliances at the scene including an MFB commander unit.

The cause of the fire was deemed suspicious and the scene has been handed over to Victoria Police for further investigation.
