More than 130 firefighters are currently battling a large fire at a recycling plant in Coolaroo.

Crews were called to the Maffra Street factory about 8.44am.

It’s believed the fire broke out in a pile of recycled materials outside the factory and workers were swiftly evacuated.

Strong northerly winds are impacting the spread of the fire and businesses on the south side have been evacuated as a precaution.

There is significant smoke in the area and MFB is urging people to avoid the area and shelter indoors away from the smoke.

Fire Investigators are on scene and will investigate the cause of the incident.
