Approximately 30 firefighters responded to a house fire in Box Hill early on Monday morning

A caller to Triple Zero (000) reported smoke and a burning smell coming from a neighbour’s house in Irving Avenue just after 4:15am.

Crews arrived on scene within five minutes and wearing breathing apparatus, searched the house for any occupants. Fortunately nobody was inside.

Firefighters believe the blaze started under the floor of the house and worked to contain it to the room in which it started, before bringing it under control.

Smoke from the fire set off the fire alarm in the apartment building next door and residents were advised to shelter in place.

MFB firefighters believe the fire started under suspicious circumstances and the scene has been handed over to Victoria Police for further investigation.
