Firefighters were called to attend a home on Edgewood Avenue in East Burwood which had caught fire shortly before 3am.

Several concerned witnesses called Triple Zero (000) to report the blaze, one citing flames that appeared to be 20 metres high.

Initial crews arrived to the scene in just six minutes and quickly began to attack the fire which had taken hold of a garage at the back of the single storey property.

It took more than 25 firefighters 25 minutes to bring the fire under control. Their efforts ensured most of the damage was confined to the garage.

Thankfully all occupants managed to evacuate from the home, and there were no reports of injury.

The cause of the fire is believed to be suspicious, and has been handed over to Victoria Police for further investigation.
