Fire rips though Altona houses

07 Dec 2018
More than 35 firefighters were called to a fire which engulfed two single story weatherboard homes in Altona this afternoon.

Firefighters arrived at the scene just before 3pm to find the front two bedrooms of one home on Railway Street fully involved. The roof of the first property collapsed, and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked quickly to contain the fire.

Due to the intensity of the flames and the hot and windy conditions the blaze spread to a neighbouring property, which quickly became involved in flames.

Initially there were concerns for occupants of the second home as they could not be located. Thankfully, a man and a child are safe and have been accounted for.

At the peak of the blaze there were ten firefighting appliances on scene, and one Commander unit.

The fire is now under control and MFB’s specialist fire investigators will investigate the cause of the incident.
