MFB firefighters responded to a fire at an apartment building in South Yarra just after 12:30pm today and arrived on scene within five minutes.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus made their way to level 14 to find bedding on fire.

The fire was quickly extinguished and the incident was brought under control within 20 minutes.

As a result, the stairwell became heavily smoke logged affecting over three floors, causing residents to self-evacuate the building.

Three people have been handed into the care of Ambulance Victoria and transported to hospital.

MFB crews remained on scene for some time to clear the air and ventilate the building. Residents are now able to return.

Victoria Police are investigating the incident.
