300 residents evacauted, one firefighter treated for smoke inhalation

Just before 5am this morning, MFB received calls to a fire at the housing commission flats at 125 Napier Street, Fitzroy.

The fire appears to be due to a mattress set alight in a sixth floor corridor.

The fire was quickly contained by crews but a community warning was issued for smoke in the area.

300 residents have been evacuated to Fitzroy Town Hall and one firefighter has been transported to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police are on scene.
