Workers were evacuated from a building site in Essendon this morning after a fire.

Fire crews were called to the incident on Leake St at 8.13am.

Several calls were received for a fire in a six-storey apartment building under construction.

The fire has been contained to a section of ceiling space, ductwork and PVC piping, and fire retardant materials between the ground floor and the basement area.

Twenty workers from the construction site were evacuated from the area. Two of the twenty workers were transported to hospital for observation after suffering from asthma, aggravated by slight smoke inhalation and other minor injuries.

Crews had the fire under control in 20 minutes. Breathing apparatus was in operation.

The cause of the fire has been deemed accidental.
