03 Mar 2011
A fire in the Myer building on Lonsdale Street was brought under control by MFB firefighters at 8.50am this morning.

The fire involved an external awning of the building, which is currently closed while undergoing renovations.

The awning was well alight when firefighters were called to the scene at 8.32am.

Firefighters were able to limit the damage to the awning and a display window in the construction zone, however the lower levels of the building experienced some smoke and water damage.

Firefighters had to force entry to the ground floor of the store to check the fire hadn’t spread further.
Traffic was also disrupted during the incident, with the west-bound lanes on Lonsdale Street closed. These have now re-opened.

Seven fire trucks and over 30 firefighters attended the incident.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
