Nine shops in a Blackburn shopping complex have been smoke damaged after an overnight fire.

MFB crews were called to a fire at The Food Republic Cafe on Blackburn Road complex at 12.24am.

The fire started in a storage room, triggering an alarm and notifying the owner who called Triple Zero.

The cafe was heavily smoke logged on arrival and firefighters wearing Breathing Apparatus entered the property to extinguish the blaze, which was deemed under control at 12.49am.

Smoke from the fire spread through up to nine other shops in the retail complex and Fire Investigators will attend this morning.
