Firefighters have battled a fire at a recycling plant at a Coolaroo factory overnight.

Crews were called to the Maffra Street property at 3.47am.

Fifty people evacuated from the factory after the dust collector started smoking.

On arrival firefighters discovered a fire in the blower fan on the dust extraction system.

Wearing breathing apparatus, crews from MFB and CFA commenced an internal attack.

A community warning was issued due to the amount of smoke issued by the fire.

The fire was deemed under control at 5.31am.

Due to the nature of the contents of the factory, the fire is deep seated inside the hopper and is taking some time to extinguish.

Thermal Imaging cameras were used to monitor the fire and ensure there were no further flare ups.

Firefighters remain on scene this morning.
