Family of seven lucky to escape house fire

A family of seven have escaped a house fire in Hawthorn overnight.

Crews were called to the Osborne Court home at 7.45pm.

The fire involved the top floor and roof space of a three storey brick veneer home.

The family of seven evacuated safely when the father arrived home and discovered the roof on fire.

The fire was intense and there was a risk of damage to an adjoining property.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus protected properties at risk and the contained the fire to the top floor which was severely damaged.

The fire was brought under control in approximately twenty minutes.

One firefighter received a minor injury and was treated at the scene.

The early estimate of damage is believed to exceed $900,000. The cause has not yet been determined and will be investigated. Nine appliances and 27 firefighters attended the blaze.
