A family of four had a lucky escape after a fire broke out at their Sunshine home in the early hours of this morning.

Firefighters attended the Leonard Street address just before 5.30am following numerous calls to Triple Zero (000).

They arrived under five minutes to find the single storey weatherboard house in flames.

Luckily, all occupants had managed to evacuate safely prior to their arrival.

The fire was initially threatening surrounding properties and firefighters were able to prevent it from spreading.

The blaze was under control in 20 minutes but the house has been extensively damaged.

The incident is being treated as suspicious and Victoria Police will investigate.
