A family was lucky to escape a house fire in Laverton overnight.

Fire crews were called to the incident on Woods Street at 1.43am.

Neighbours reported hearing screaming and seeing large flames shooting from the house.

On arrival firefighters found the single-storey brick home was totally involved in fire.  The fire was brought under control in just over an hour.

The family who resided in the DHS managed home managed to self-evacuate after their smoke alarm alerted them to the fire.

A male in his mid-30s received minor burns and a small laceration to his arm and was treated by paramedics at the scene.

Firefighters stayed on scene overnight. The cause will be investigated.

The family made their own emergency accommodation arrangements.
