MFB firefighters have extinguished a unit fire in Toorak that broke out just after 5am this morning.

Crews were alerted to the complex on Grange Rd after several neighbours and a passer-by raised the alarm.

The first firefighting appliance arrived within six minutes and was met with a second storey balcony engulfed in flames and immediately requested additional resources.

More than 25 firefighters conducted both an external and internal attack on the blaze donned in breathing apparatus. A teleboom appliance also provided assistance at the scene.

The incident was declared under control within 20 minutes.

The quick work of firefighters contained the damage to the balcony area and adjacent room underneath.

The cause of the blaze is believed to be electrical in nature.
