A Deer Park residence has been saved from extensive damage thanks to the quick work of firefighters.

MFB firefighters were called to the property on Byrne Street just after 9:30pm following reports of a fire in the kitchen.

Initial crews arrived in four minutes to find the single storey dwelling partially engulfed in flames and called for additional resources.

A preliminary search found that no one was inside. Firefighters attacked the fire internally and their efforts contained the fire to the rear of the home.

The incident was declared under control in less than an hour.

Firefighters determined the cause of the blaze had suspicious circumstances and will had the scene over to Victoria Police once firefighting duties are complete.

CFA also assisted at the scene.
