Almost 30 firefighters were called to a Chemist on Droop Street in Footscray after it caught alight at around 1:30am on Monday morning.

The initial crew arrived to Nicholson Street in Footscray in a little over three minutes and were met with a fire that was threatening to spread to neighbouring shops.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus for protection from the thick black smoke forced their way into the building to access the fire.

The fire was extinguished quickly, but crews spent some time carefully checking that the fire did not spread into the walls or roof cavity.

The fire was declared under control at around 2:20am.

At this stage it is not clear what caused the blaze to start. MFB’s specialist Fire Investigation and Analysis unit will investigate on Monday morning.

At the height of the fire there were seven fire appliances on scene including one aerial and one rescue appliance, in addition to three other units.
