Firefighters have quickly stopped the spread of a fire on Cirque Drive in Footscray, amid fears it would spread along a row of interconnected townhouses.

The first crew arrived on scene in just over three minutes and found a bedroom alight on the third storey.

Wearing breathing apparatus for protection from the smoke, firefighters made their way into the building to attack the fire and ensure no one was inside.

Thankfully, three occupants managed to escape however one male in his twenties was transported to hospital by Ambulance Victoria as a precaution.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control just after 8:30pm, within half an hour of the call to Triple Zero (000).

MFB crews will remain on scene until the fire has been completely extinguished.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

At the height of the fire there were approximately 30 firefighters on scene on board five pumpers, a rescue unit and two other units.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria were also on scene assisting.
