Crews call for caution while cooking

Firefighters are urging residents to be cautious when cooking, following a spate of kitchen fires across Melbourne this week.

Since late last week MFB crews have been called to three separate kitchen fires, each of which began while residents were cooking and quickly spread up through range hoods. 

On Monday evening firefighters responded to a kitchen fire at a home in Glen Waverley which quickly spread from a range hood and wreaked havoc in the roof cavity. 

Within a matter of hours crews responded to another kitchen fire at a high rise building in West Melbourne, which led to the evacuation of more than 60 residents and left one person with minor injuries.

On Thursday evening firefighters were called to a similar incident on Stockmans Way in Kensington which saw three family members evacuate after their kitchen caught alight.

Martin Braid, MFB’s Assistant Chief Fire Officer and Director of Community Risk and Resilience cautioned residents and urged them to take care in the kitchen.

“Year after year, we see that unattended cooking is the single largest cause of fire in the home – and most of the time the incidents our crews respond to are preventable,” he said.

“It is vital that you keep your stove top, griller, oven, range hood and cooking area free from built up grease, dust and oil – and never leave cooking unattended, even for a moment.

“Make sure anything combustible like a tea towel or paper towels are kept far away from cooking and heat sources,” said Assistant Chief Fire Officer Martin Braid.
