Early morning blaze erupts in 3 storey building

Crews rushed to York Street in South Melbourne at 6:45am this morning after multiple calls were received for a fire that engulfed a 3 storey building.
MFB response was upgraded due to the number of calls.
First crews on scene upgraded the call again due to the extent and intensity of the fire.
The fire engulfed all three levels and surrounding buildings were evacuated.
There are concerns about the structural integrity of the building with cracks appearing in some walls, however crews have been moved back in these sections.
The fire was declared under control at 9:24am.
Asbestos has been identified in the building and appropriate procedures have put in place.
It is believed the building is under renovation and no persons were present at the time.
The building is approximately 20 metre by 20 metre and was previously a hotel.
The fire has been deemed suspicious and Victoria Police are investigating.
Eight firefighting appliances will remain on scene for the remainder of the day.
