Firefighters contained the blaze to rear of the 15x30m property

MFB firefighters were called to the single storey house fire in Wood St, St Albans just after 2:00pm.

On arrival, crews found the rear of the structure fully involved.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus made access to search the premises for occupants and no one was found.

Due to the age of the structure, crews implemented procedures to mitigate the threat of asbestos.

Neighbours were initially warned of the fire by a working smoke alarm and attempted to knock on the door to alert the possible occupants.

The fire was deemed under control at 2:41pm. The cause of the blaze is being investigated.

MFB crews will remain on scene for a number of hours. The general public is advised to avoid the area.
