MFB firefighters have been called to a building fire on Mackie Road in Bentleigh East.

A member of the public alerted MFB to the blaze through a Triple Zero (000) citing a large amount of smoke in the area.

Initial crews arrived on scene shortly before 2pm in less than six minutes. On arrival they found the structure was well alight with a large amount of smoke issuing.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus conducted an internal attack on the fire in a bid to contain the fire.

Hard work by crews ensured the fire was brought under control in just 18 minutes.

At the peak of the blaze there were 18 Firefighters in attendance and five firefighting appliances on scene.

At this stage there are no reports of injury.

Due to a large amount of smoke in the area a community advice message has been issued.

MFB is urging that surrounding residents close their windows and doors, and switch off heating and cooling systems.

Mackie Road is closed between North Rd and Argyle St Bentleigh East, and emergency services are expected to remain on scene for some time.

Victoria police and Ambulance Victoria are currently on scene assisting MFB.
