MFB crews are currently on scene at a structure fire in Essendon. Crews were called to a disused car sales room on Keilor Road just before 3am.

Initial firefighting crews arrived on scene in 7 minutes to find the top floor of a double storey structure fully alight.

Shortly after MFB firefighters arrived, the top floor of the 30m x 40m building collapsed.

Due to the intensity of the blaze, and structural collapse, firefighting operations were initially undertaken externally using aerial appliances and monitors.

Once the structure was made safe, MFB crews wearing breathing apparatus conducted an internal search of the building. No injuries have been reported.

Firefighters worked hard to diminish the flames, and the fire was declared under control in under an hour.

One nearby resident was evacuated for their safety, and a community warning was issued due to smoke in the area.

Keilor Road is currently closed in both directions, which may create delays to the morning tram service.

A total of 13 MFB appliances and approximately 50 firefighters attended the incident.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria are on scene assisting MFB.

Specialist MFB Fire Investigators are set to assess the incident to determine a cause.

It is expected that firefighters will remain on scene for some time. The community are advised to avoid the area if possible.
