Chemical spill at West Melbourne docks

10 Mar 2017
MFB firefighters are currently on scene at West Melbourne docks where a shipping container is leaking hydrochloric acid.

Crews were called to the dock at Phillipps Road about 6.30am after staff noticed an 8mm hole in the 20,000 litre tank.

The area has been cordoned off and all staff moved out while MFB work on the leak.

Firefighters have placed an inflatable device underneath the hole, blocking the leak of fluid and vapours.

Arrangements are being made to pump the hydrochloric acid out of the damaged tank and into a new one.

Firefighters will then work with staff to neutralise the chemical and ensure the area is safe.

They expect to be on scene for several hours.
