Chemical spill at Coode Island

Firefighters spent a busy night following a chemical spill in West Melbourne.

Crews were called to an area of the docks known as "Coode Island" shortly after 6.30pm, following reports of a container leak.

MFB firefighters, including HAZMAT specialists and marine response were quick on scene and worked over several hours to painstakingly decant the leaking chemical into smaller containers.

It's believed the chemical involved was Sodium Hydroxide, a corrosive substance.
