A dozen firefighters have been called to a CBD hotel following the activation of the fire system on Sunday morning.

Crews were alerted to the incident at 8.15am and arrived to the hotel on King Street in less than five minutes. The entire building was smoke logged and firefighters donned in breathing apparatus entered the building to find a fire containing building materials and rubbish at the base of the stairs.

The fire was extinguished within minutes and crews are working to ventilate the space.

Once the area is deemed safe occupants will be able to return to the hotel.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Update as of 10am

Firefighters determined that the most likely cause of the fire was due to an improperly disposed cigarette butt.
