Blaze destroys Richmond gym

A high performance gym and sports medicine centre in Richmond was destroyed by fire this morning.

Crews were called to the High Performance Training Centre on Church Street at the corner Tweedie Place at 4.06am.

It took more than 50 firefighters a little over two hours to contain the blaze.

The building is 50 metre by 30 metre single storey brick construction with severe damage to the rear.

Church Street and surrounding roads were closed while firefighters were on scene and tram services on church Street were disrupted.

Firefighters wore breathing apparatus.  There have been no reports of injuries.

The damage cost is yet to be determined and MFB Fire Investigators are now on scene.
