More than 25 firefighters have fought to contain a blaze which engulfed a church in Ashburton overnight.

Crews were dispatched to Ashburn Grove just after 1:30am on Wednesday morning.

Thick smoke and flames were coming from the roof when firefighters first arrived, the entire church was alight.

Wearing breathing apparatus, crews quickly turned their hoses to the old church and the neighbouring buildings including the newly constructed church, which were at risk.

Crews were able to make their way inside the church to extinguish the fire. Their hard work ensured the fire was brought under control at 2:18am, just 46 minutes after they were first dispatched.

Thankfully, no one was inside the building at the time of the fire and there are no injuries.

It is not yet known what caused the fire, MFB’s specialist Fire Investigation Unit will arrive on scene early Wednesday morning to conduct further analysis.

MFB was assisted on scene by Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria and the utilities company.

At the height of the fire there were seven MFB appliances on scene, including an aerial appliance and a rescue appliance.

UPDATE as of 1:40pm: Fire Investigators have determined the fire originated in the kitchen due to an electrical fault with an appliance.
