More than 20 firefighters were called to Ballarat Road in Albion after a fire at a metal recycling plant early on Wednesday morning.

Multiple callers to Triple Zero (000) advised there were flames coming close to a factory at the rear of the plant, just before 5:20am.

Firefighters arrived to the scene in six minutes and managed to prevent the fire from spreading from an excavator to other materials that were stored in the recycling plant.

Crews brought the fire under control in ten minutes.

MFB firefighters believe the fire started under suspicious circumstances and the scene has been handed over to Victoria Police for further investigation.
