Firefighters attended a fire at a commercial laundry in the basement of Darling Towers (apartment complex) early Sunday morning.

Whilst the fire was contained to the basement area, black thick smoke filled the entire 4 storey, brick building.  The fire took 30 minutes to bring under control.

55 residents self evacuated with no injuries reported.  During the fire, MFB Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, searched for one occupant, who was later safely accounted for.

MFB Fire Investigators have attended the scene and deemed the fire to be of a suspicious nature.  Police have been informed.

The local council Building Surveyor has been requested to attend due to concerns for the structural integrity of the concrete base of the building.

Over 28 firefighters attended the incident.
