Dangerous Goods

If you use or store dangerous goods, you may be subject to the Dangerous Goods Act 1985 and the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004.

If so, your duties and obligations are stipulated in the respective subordinate legislations as follows:

  • Dangerous Goods (Storage and Handling) Regulations 2000
  • Dangerous Goods (Explosives) Regulations 2000
  • Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2007

As an operator or owner of a business related to dangerous goods which is subject to any of these legislations, you are required to formally request from our Dangerous Goods Department for Fire Service Written Advice.

Upon receipt of your formal request, MFB will advise / guide you in one or both of the following subjects:

  • development and review of emergency plan
  • assessment of fire protection adequacy

When reviewing emergency plans, MFB assess the adequacy to ensure that the following objectives are achieved:

  • all occupants can evacuate safely
  • safe and temporary refuge is provided in the event that full safe evacuation is not achieved
  • emergency responders are provided with safe approach
  • environmental impact is mitigated

You remain responsible for the content of your submission to us. You are the owner of the emergency plan and other documentations. Hence, you are advised to ensure the accuracy and completeness of, but not limited to, the following items:

  • all hazards are identified
  • all identified hazards are appropriately managed
  • all proposed measures are fit for purpose
