Total Fire Ban Permit and General Information
Fire restrictions or Total Fire Bans (TFB) can be applied across all of Victoria by the Country Fire Authority (CFA) when fire danger is highest – usually from November through to April.
The Application Process
TFB permits will be considered for persons conducting an Industrial Trade or Operation, Community or Charitable Organisation, Statutory Corporation or Municipal Council and may include Caterers, Building Industry, Infrastructure Providers, Essential Service Providers, Emergency Services, Event/Entertainment Industry.
Daily TFB Permits maybe issued in advance of a day being declared by the Chief Fire Officer (CFO) of the CFA subject to the conditions of the Permit.
To apply for a permit to light a fire inside the Metropolitan Fire District (MFD) on a day of TFB under the provisions of the CFA Act 1958 (Section 40) you must:
- Complete the relevant application form (available for download below)
- Submit completed application in person to your relevant/local MFB District Office for processing. Note: Applications that cover various work sites across the Metropolitan Fire District are to be submitted to one District Office only.

Note: Days of TFB are declared by the CFO of the CFA after consultation with the Commonwealth Bureau of Meteorology and are usually announced to the public via media outlets on the proceeding day.
