Vehicle Fire Safety

Follow these simple steps:

1. Turn off ignition, place in park and engage hand brake.

2. Evacuate car, shut doors and keep area clear for a safe distance.

3. Ensure Fire Brigade is called.

4. If it is SAFE and you are confident then:

  • If fire under bonnet - release bonnet catch only. Do not lift bonnet as rush of air could cause flare-up resulting in serious burns. Discharge contents of extinguisher through bonnet gap.
  • If fire in cabin - then discharge contents of extinguisher into cabin directly on to fire and close door.
  • If LPG powered - turn off main supply valve (familiarise yourself with its location).
  • If extinguisher available, attempt to extinguish fire with extreme caution.

IMPORTANT: Smoke from burning plastics etc. contains many toxic substances. Avoid breathing smoke at all costs.

5. When fire has been extinguished:

  • Remove battery leads from terminals, if safe to do so.
  • Do not drive car until checked by auto electrician or qualified mechanic.

6. We recommend the purchase of a 1A 5B(E) dry powder portable fire extinguisher, installed in an easily accessible location.
