Seniors Fire Safety Program

Seniors Fire Safety Program is a fire safety education strategy for seniors.

Seniors are a high risk group because:

  • Some medications decrease mobility and hearing which can reduce a person's ability to detect and escape from fire
  • Disabilities can make it difficult for some seniors to respond quickly to a developing fire
  • Living alone can increase vulnerability to fire

Fire safety presentations are delivered by retired MFB firefighters with more than 250 years of firefighting experience behind them.

Since its inception in 1993, this group of retired firefighters have spoken to hundreds of seniors groups throughout the metropolitan area including Probus, RSL Clubs, Church groups, Masonic Lodges and multicultural groups. This program is free of charge.

Key Program Topics:

  • Importance of smoke alarm installation and maintenance
  • Planning for safe evacuation
  • Safe cooking practices
  • Safe use of electrical appliances
  • Importance of regular home hazard checks
